If you’re a beauty-conscious woman, then there’s no doubt that body lotion is one of the products you need to have. Body lotion is an essential part of your daily skincare routine. It helps protect your skin from dryness and chapping. The body lotion comes in a variety of forms and is available in different textures and scents. You can choose from creams, lotions, mists, and body oils. Here are a few simple tips that will help you make your own.
The main ingredients of body lotion include water, oils, and butter. The most commonly used ingredients are vegetable oil, mineral oil or petrolatum, glycerin or propylene glycol (often called PG), aloe vera gel, and a variety of essential oils.

Here’s how you can make your body lotion at home:
Step 1 – Choose Your Body Lotion Base
There are different lotion bases you can choose from. Oil lotion base is usually white and it’s highly moisturizing because of rancid oil content, while body lotion bases are clear or translucent with no scent. Lotion bases have a longer shelf life than creams due to the lack of water content so they can be stored at room temperature for 2-3 months before use.
Step 2 – Add Essential Oils to Your Body Lotion Base
You can add essential oils to the body lotion base at any time during the process. Choose a body lotion base with 4-10% water and put it in your blender or food processor, then blend until smooth like butter. You can also use this body lotion as an emulsifying agent for homemade lip balm by adding 10-15 drops of essential oil directly into the mixture before cooling down.
Step 3 – How Long to Mix Essential Oils into Body Lotion Base
You can add essential oils to the body lotion base whenever you feel like it. You don’t have to wait until the lotion is completely cool or it hardens. The consistency of body lotion can be changed at any time, so you may think that this step isn’t necessary because your body lotion will always be ready in no time; but let’s face it, body lotion is something you will use every day, so why not take care of it while the time’s your own?
Step 4 – Add Essential Oils into Body Lotion Base
You can also add essential oils to the body lotion base at any time during the process. Choose a body lotion with 10-20% water and put it in your blender or food processor, then blend until smooth like butter (or cream). You can also use this body lotion as an emulsifying agent for homemade lip balm by adding 15-20 drops of essential oil directly into the mixture before cooling it down.
Step 5 – Add Essential Oils To Body Lotion Base
When you’ve added all your ingredients to the body lotion base, mix around gently with a spoon until everything is well combined and no clumps are visible on top (you may need a little extra body lotion base to get it all mixed in).
Once body lotion is well-mixed, add essential oils and mix again for another couple of minutes. You want your body lotion to be nice and thick by the time you can apply it on the skin – so don’t worry if the mixture looks a little bit too watery at first!
Step 6 – Apply body lotion onto the skin and massage it well.
Step 7 – After body lotion has been applied to the skin,
Leave it to dry for a couple of minutes before massaging again. If you feel like your body lotion is too thick after application (it will harden fast), then add extra drops of essential oil into the body lotion base until desired consistency is reached.
The above steps are applicable if any other ingredient was added to the body lotion base. If you want to find out more information about all the ingredients, please check this blog post here: Japanese Body Lotion Base Ingredients

Step 8 – Apply essential oils onto body lotion after it has dried up and hardened
This is an optional step but I usually apply my favorite essential oils directly onto the skin of moisturized body lotion from time to time. These essential oils are herbs, flowers, and oils that have been collected from plants in their natural environment. They contain a lot of nutrients because they grew naturally without human interference. I like to apply body lotion with these essential oils on top so that my skin absorbs the vitamins more easily into body cells than when just applying body lotion alone.
For example, you may use lavender oil: Lavender Oil Benefits & Uses you may use lemongrass oil: Lemongrass Oil Benefits & Uses you may also use a lotion base with essential oils on top for body lotion.
Step 9 – Apply body lotion onto body skin and massage it well until it is fully absorbed into the skin
For example, you may apply lavender oil directly to your face or body if you want to feel refreshed all day long! The above steps are applicable when body lotion is used as a body lotion. When body lotion is combined with a homemade facial mask, please refer to the steps below:
